La Burdalesa
On the corner of Santa Fe and Oro, very close to the Palermo subte stop on the D Line, is one of the best panaderías in Buenos Aires. It is called La Burdalesa and a sweet-lover’s heaven.
_______________________
It has to be said that on the top of all things sweet, Buenos Aires is outstanding. It cannot be denied that a place which is home to dulce de leche and alfajores is anything but an expert with sugar and refined products. In addition, the presentation of the various cakes, tarts, chocolates and pastries on offer is quite simply excellent.
_______________________
Shop windows full of sickly treats have never tempted me as much as they do in the windows of Buenos Aires, but La Burdalesa is a cut above the rest in terms of quality, variety, quantity, customer care and price.
_______________________
Whenever you buy anything in this bakery, the way in which the goods are wrapped up is enough to make you think that you’ve just bought some very expensive lingerie in Selfridges in London or in Macy’s in New York. You really do leave with a gift when you leave La Burdalesa, whether that’s a gift for someone else or for yourself!
_______________________
There are so many things to buy that it seems futile to begin listing them all, however, do expect to see a range of sandwiches (sometimes very cute mini-ones held together with cocktail sticks), large cakes, budins, pastry slices, cream filled wonders, facturas and biscuits galore.
________________________
However, their muffins are, in my opinion, the best thing to buy for a afternoon treat as a strong coffee accompaniment in the relaxation of your own sweet abode. They have some fantastic combinations of muffins on offer, including chocolate and cashew (my favourite – what a combination!), the muffins are huge (I didn’t actually want to eat anything else for the rest of the day) and they only cost 3 pesos!!! (which, when you look at the size of the things, is quite impressive).
_________________________
To sum up, I feel it important to reiterate that the muffins are not the only fantastic buy to be had in this week’s Top Food Spot, and so if muffins are what you go for, you can be sure to find something that you’ll like. Take a stroll through the botanical gardens, a breeze around Plaza Italia and stop off at La Burdalesa before moving on to your next adventure in Argentina’s very sweet capital.

Atlas Cinemas and the Subte Deal
If you haven’t noticed, or if you haven’t been on the subte for a while, then take heed of this.....
_______________________
Atlas Cinemas across the city are offering 2 for the price of 1 tickets to any film in any of their outlets when you hand over one of the subte tickets that clearly show the offer. I have collected three of them so far and it has made me go to the cinema more regularly recently, which is always a good thing.
________________________
Last Saturday, at the Atlas on Santa Fe, I went with a friend to see the recent film released about the life and success of the fashion designer, Coco Chanel. The film (with Sophie Tattou playing the lead) is in French with Spanish subtitles, but if your language skills are up to it, or if you are up for the challenge, I wholeheartedly recommend that you give it a whirl.
________________________
The story is beautiful told, it is very well acted and the script is excellent. Equally, the Atlas Cinemas themselves offer a pleasant way to watch a movie. The theatres are a little older than the likes of the Cinemax screens and other modern establishments in BA. You get to choose your seat when you enter and there aren’t too many trailers (if you don’t like that kind of thing).
________________________
So, when riding on the subte this week, check your ticket before throwing it away. It may well be offering you an excellent deal to see a little film at a discount. Call a friend and enjoy!

The City of Salta and The MAAM
As promised, a little focus on the city of Salta this week, just in case anyone is planning to head up north for a bit of a visit.
________________________
The city of Salta has a fairly small and has a very pretty plaza at its heart. The plaza is surrounded by a number of very nice bars and restaurants and full to the brim with people day and night. The cathedral is beautiful and there is a gondola that you can take up to the top of El Cerro, about 1000m, very close to the centre. In fact walking up, taking a coffee in the restaurant at the top and then taking the gondola down is a lovely way to get acquainted with the city when you arrive.
________________________
Aside from eating, drinking and lazing around on a park bench in the sunshine, or the ride on the gondola, Salta does offer the visitor one very special surprise in the form of an exhibition at The MAAM (Museum Arqueología de Alta Montaña… The High Mountain Archeological Museum in Salta).
________________________
Inside this museum, a Salta visitor can see and learn about the three mummy children who are over 500 years old and, incredibly due to the conditions in surrounding mountains where they were found, perfectly intact.
________________________
The Museum itself was opened in 2004 and allows the visitor to learn a little about the lives, culture and heritage of the INCAs and the mummy children in particular. The three children were found in 1999 in the Llullaillaco Volcano (above 6739 metres above sea level) in the Andes range.
_______________________
Buried with the children were over 100 other different artefacts that had been offered up to the INCA gods as a ritual sacrifice along with the three youngsters. It was customary to offer up the most beautiful and healthy of children as a sacrifice and therefore seen by the INCA community as a great honour to have your child chosen from many.
_______________________
The children were found deep underground as though they had been lowered down carefully into some kind of well formation. They were found to have traces of alcohol on their lips, perhaps as a way to subdue them as they were passed down into the wells and one child, the female (thought to be 15 years of age), had been slightly deformed from what appears to have been a lightning bolt.
_______________________
The exhibition is fascinating and impossible to describe on paper. Looking at a child’s body, over 500 years old, but in absolute perfect condition is astounding. It makes a trip to Salta even more worthy and definitely well worth the 20 pesos entrance fee.

CUIT number
If you are trying to look for work in Buenos Aires, you will probably have realised that in order to get paid (when working for a company, at least) you need something called a CUIT number. Obtaining such a number can be a long and lengthy process and quite a lot of the time, applications are denied.
________________________
However, I am one of those lucky people (working in BA as a teacher of English as well as for SAE) who has managed to get their CUIT number and for me it was a fairly painless process.
________________________
To explain how to go about getting a number in this newsletter would take a lot of time and would perhaps be fairly complex reading too. However, if anyone needs help in this area and wants to come in to the office or contact me directly to ask questions, please feel free.
________________________
My email address is, as always buenosairesclubhouse@saexplorers.org and the only thing I ask is that if you plan to come in to the office, send me an email giving me notice. All my documents on obtaining the CUIT are at my flat and it is impossible for me to remember everything without them.

| Palabras! Palabras!...and...Question of the week |
|

Palabras, Palabras!
In Argentina they say barbaro and in Venezuela they say chévere. In English, one of the closest translations would be ´cool.´

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION.......What are the main ingredients for an alfajor?
What are the main ingredients for an alfajor? Flour, eggs, baking powder, sugar, vanilla essence and coconut are all necessary. However, which ingredient is the most important? What can an alfajor truly not do without?..... The all-important Dulce de Leche!!!
| -------------------------- |

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION....... When the first English feet stepped onto Argentine soil, what little pictures did they engrave into their own styles of mate? (Hint.... there were three things).
Answers to: buenosairesclubhouse@saexplorers.org
Next week, I'll publish the answer....Ooooo!

| This Week's Winning Photo |
|
|
Last week, Beatrice Murch sent us a very endearing shot of the Mercado de Liniers in Mataderos. This Week, Nina, our newest intern has offered up such a cute shot of the peguins at Puerto Madre in the Patagonian region of Argentina. Nina would like to add that after seeing the hundreds of peguins that are waddling around, they cease to be as cute, but for the rest of us in the office they are the most adorable little things we've seen for a long time and simply had to be included in this week's newsletter.

To enter our weekly competition, simply send in your pics to my email address buenosairesclubhouse@saexplorers.org (please put PHOTO COMPETITION in the subject heading) and be sure to include a little info about the photo along with your details so that we can give you credit.
