Hello my dears,
Firstly, I was sad to have missed the artesanal beer event.... it’s one of my favourites. However, travelling around more of South America this week has been grand and so I won´t worry myself too much! So what have I been up to with my non Spanish-speaking pal this week?.....
We have paraglided across the Sacred Valley in Cusco, made the INCA trail to Machu Picchu in good time and good health and have sampled the delights of Peru´s buzzing city, Arequipa - one of the cleanest and prettiest cities I have had the pleasure of relaxing in.

ADVERTISING WITH SAE!!!!
We are at present focusing a lot on advertising. This is because we have a new publication coming out (a guide book that we will be selling here in the Clubhouse) which will be full of tourist and expat advice that can’t be found in other guide books, because we’re writing it! It is first-hand knowledge, written by real expats who live here in BA and is therefore the most up-to-date information that can be found. If you want to advertise with us, making yourself known to expats and tourists who pass through our office or who live in BA, contact our Marketing Manager, Jessica Dufresne at baadvertising@saexplorers.org
___________________________________
INTERN WITH US!
Over the past few months we’ve had some fantastic interns – Caroline Major (Brazil expert from London), Amelia Edwards (Events Manager from Philadelphia), Jessica Dufresne (Marketing Wizz Kid from Michigan) and the newest Caroline Stephenson from Wales, who seems to be dipping into everything that needs doing right now. We are a fantastic bunch and it’s a pleasure coming to the office every day. So, if you want some SAE experience and you feel you’ve got something to offer, get in touch with us at baclub@saexplorers.org
___________________________________
Do you have a product you would like to sell?
Our Clubhouse here in BA is a good place to sell stuff. Why???? Because people pass through here all the time. We are willing to set up an agreement with anyone interested in selling something (for example, if you make great bags, jewellery or you want to sell some art) whereby we take care of the sales for you in exchange for receiving a small percentage of the purchase itself. Interested??? Email us at baclub@saexplorers.org
___________________________________
Storing Luggage at The Clubhouse
Please remember that if you want to store or pick-up luggage you need to make an appointment with us beforehand via email. This is because we store all luggage at a different location and we will need to organise a time to meet. Email all luggage correspondence to baclub@saexplorers.org
___________________________________
Poke us, befriend us.
Please visit our facebook page because it includes lots of stuff about events, contact details (that are up-to-date!) and more. Find us online at
___________________________________
WE HAVE TELEPHONE CONNECTION!
Finally, the powers that be here in BA have managed to get around to connecting our telephone line and so you can now call us from anywhere the city on 5275 0137 (+54 11 and then the number if you're calling from outside Argentina or if you're using skype to call us). Also, if you need to make a local call to any landline here in the city you can do so from our office for FREE.

Star Wars Exhibition @ The Recoleta Cultural Centre
Every day during opening hours
Yes, it’s true! Even Buenos Aires has not escaped the George Lucas phenomenon and, to be honest, I’m more than interested in just popping along to see what kind of exhibits they have on show. Particularly, as the exhibit will remain until 30th August and so there’s plenty of time.
Cost: 35 pesos or FREE to children under the age of 3

El Gato Negro
What a beautifully charming little place this is. One of the ‘café notables’ in the city, El Gato Negro, really is worth a look. Word on the street is that the variety on offer at The Cat Black has reduced considerably over the past few years; that at present there really only is a few sandwiches and budins on offer to enjoy with your cup of fresh coffee, but I have to say that the same does not apply to the quality.
______________________________
The coffee is very good and the budins that are on offer are of star quality. Our very own Jessica Dufresne enjoyed a huge portion of budin de almendra (almond cake) without any complaints and my cafe cortado (accompanied by some very tasty biscuits) did nothing but wonders.
______________________________
If you haven’t been to visit the witch’s feline, then it might please you to know that it’s a place famous for its selection of teas, coffees and spices, which are all beautifully lined up in jars or displayed in small quadrangular boxes for all to see. Indeed, whilst stopping off for a coffee and a croissant, you’ll be able to see all those who work there hard at work, preparing and sorting through their specialised stock and you will want to sneak a few happy snaps to keep with you as memories.
______________________________
The waiters are all beautifully attired and the use of red on the walls gives the coffee house more than a warm feel; it’s much more passionate, much stronger than that. The chairs and tables are something out of 1920s France and the upstairs area is equally as inviting. To some, El Gato Negro may well be just another good coffee shop amongst so many in BA, but to me it’s in a class of its own: specialised, traditional and decadent without breaking the bank.

The stretch of bars along Reconquista, Microcenter
Bearing in mind that it’s no good going to this area on a Saturday evening (much like trying to go out for a wild evening on the booze in London’s City district) if you fancy dropping by during the week, you’re guaranteed a good night out. The bars that line Reconquista are plentiful and sufficiently varied enough to make an otherwise dull Thursday evening a night of laughter and cheer. (Can you picture it?)
____________________________
However, of all of them, I really would not recommend ‘Kilkenny.’ Perhaps I’m going against all common thought here as lots of people, Argentines and expats, have told me to go to Kilkenny and have praised it for its atmosphere and all-round comfort. However, I found it quite pricey (without anything to boast about for the price), the live band that night was unnecessarily loud and most people in the bar were trying to have a conversation and were not listening to them anyway and the inside décor is nothing to really shout about. With some places in BA (like Bar Seddon in San Telmo for instance) when you enter, even though it’s just a simple bar, you get a good feeling; it feels warm and inviting. The Kilkenny is not like that.
______________________________
Yes I enjoyed my evening, but because I was with friends, not because the place itself had anything to do with raising my spirits. It does have a large, circular, central bar on the bottom floor and therefore the range of drinks is plentiful, but I’m not really sure why anyone would want to pass an entire evening in there sampling all the drinks on offer in the first place.
______________________________
So, by all means, enjoy the ‘after-work drinks scene’ on Reconquista – cheeky Thursday exists in BA too! – but perhaps avoid The Kilkenny…. or try it out for yourselves and write in to tell me how right/wrong I was using our rating system.

Coffee delivered to your work
This week’s focus is less of an informative piece and more of a quiet celebration on my part. One of the things that I love about this city is watching all those café workers deliver coffee to the busy businessmen and women who are simply far too busy to leave their desks even for a second. These coffee deliverers are amazing. Firstly, the concept of coffee delivered to your door appeals to me anyway, but on top of that the skill and grace with which the office’s biggest vice is delivered is something I will always remember about Buenos Aires.
__________________________
The silver serving platters are held high and the traffic is dodged with an impressive sense of experience and know-how. The deliveries are quick, the tips are small and, as far as I know, it is a service not offered in other major cities. Sure, it’s possible to call up and place a large order of coffees for everyone during an important meeting in London for example, but you’re not going to be served by someone holding a silver platter. Nor are you going to be served with real cups and cutlery. Nor are you going to be revisited by the same waiter within the hour who has returned to collect the cups and make your office space spick and span once more.
__________________________
Coffee delivery, in this manner, belongs only to the life of someone living in BA and I love it! It’s a decadent way to feed that coffee craving and makes all those gruesome business meetings pass by with joy. When the buzzer to the SAE Clubhouse here in BA rings, I would be lying if I said that the faces of our friendly team did not immediately light up and shine from sheer excitement. We too are fans of this unique city offering and it’s one of the things that puts life here in South America’s European Oasis in my top list of five.

How to get to the international airport the cheap way – using a colectivo
Depending on which GuiaT you have (that’s assuming you have one at all! – the GuiaT is the small book that you should have containing all of the bus routes in the city and costs no more than 5 pesos from kioscos or guys on the streets) it will either say that you can take the number 8 or the number 86 to the airport.
_________________________
As I had to make the journey myself recently, I can tell you that the TRUE number colectivo that you have to catch to get to the airport (and this colectivo drops you right inside the airport too – what service!) is the 8. It has simply replaced the other route, but the publication of this alteration was not particularly wide-spread. I only found out through a friend. The route runs all the way from La Boca, through San Telmo and then travels all the way along Rivadavia from Plaza de Mayo until Gral Paz – a huge road that begins the real route to the airport. Therefore, wherever you live in the city, get yourself to the nearest point on Rivadavia (unless you live in La Boca or San Telmo) and hop on the route from there.
_________________________
The whole journey costs a whopping 2 pesos!!!!! What a bargain and takes roughly 2 hours (that’s me timing myself door to door, by the way – I live in Palermo, had to take one colectivo to Rivadavia and then caught the 8 from there). Door to door, for the ridiculously small price, I don’t think is bad at all.
__________________________
So, if you need to meet someone at the airport, or if you’re travelling light and trying to save on some cash, take the 8!

| Palabras! Palabras!...and...Question of the week |
|
Palabras, Palabras!
Luca translated into English means ‘thousand’ when you’re talking about money. It is the English equivalent of saying ‘a grand.’ I hope that if you use it, it’s because you’re about to RECEIVE one rather than have to pay out for one!

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION.......What is ‘morcilla’? Morcilla is ‘black pudding.’ Yes, that fine-filled sausage of congealed pigs’ blood that the British used to (although some still do) enjoy for breakfast along with the eggs, bacon and fried bread. Argentines are also a fan of this potent carnivorous election and sometimes enjoy it alongside the choripan as part of the opening to a traditional asado.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION.......What is ‘Telefe’?
Answers to: buenosairesclubhouse@saexplorers.org
