Hi guys!
Thanks to all those people who attended our Artesanal Beer Tasting Event last Thursday @ V&S Hostel on Viamonte. It was our most successful event to date since moving The Clubhouse to the Microcentro location; a total of 18 people attended and 3 hours of blissful drinking and muching on picadas were had by all. Enjoy the pics below!

Wednesday 16th September @ 4.45pm in The Clubhouse (straight after conversation class)
Do you know how to play the Argentine card game called 'Truco'? It's a very cool game, full of subtle looks and signals between the different players that makes for an entertaining afternoon. Amauta Spanish School are sending some of their experienced representatives to the BA Clubhouse to teach you all. It's going to be a fun afternoon - delivered in Spanish, so more practice for you (with us on hand to translate as always) - and the best thing is that we've organised this activity to run directly after the Spanish conversation class on Wednesday. That means that you don't have to find time to come to the Clubhouse on another day and your Spanish will be nicely oiled to participate in the game too. How can you resist?!

Another new intern, but this time...... it's a BOY!!!!
Graeme Fox, from Dublin in Ireland, is the newest addition to our crazy team here in BA. Graeme has arrived with very little plans to leave (once we get our claws into him, he will not be able to go, even if he wants to!) As our first male intern, we hope he won’t be our last. We particularly like the way in which he taps ever so lightly on the door at 10.00am when arriving for a full-on day in the house of fun.
If you have any questions about discounts or information we have on hostels and restaurants, you can email him at badiscounts@saexplorers.org

INTERN WITH US!
Over the past few months we’ve had some fantastic interns – Jessica Dufresne (Marketing Wizz Kid from Michigan), Caroline Stephenson (Advertising Superwoman from Wales), Kat Mowbray (Events Manager from England) and most recently Nina Schuster from Germany and Graeme Fox from Ireland, who are both all hands on deck with admin resources and website updating. We are a fantastic bunch and it’s a pleasure coming to the office every day. So, if you want some SAE experience and you feel you’ve got something to offer, get in touch with us at baclub@saexplorers.org

Do you have a product you would like to sell?
Our Clubhouse here in BA is a good place to sell stuff. Why???? Because people pass through here all the time. We are willing to set up an agreement with anyone interested in selling something (for example, if you make great bags, jewellery or you want to sell some art) whereby we take care of the sales for you in exchange for receiving a small percentage of the purchase itself. Interested??? Email us at baclub@saexplorers.org

Storing Luggage at The Clubhouse
THE STORAGE VENUE HAS CHANGED!!!
Please remember that if you want to store or pick-up luggage you need to make an appointment with us beforehand via email. Our luggage store location has changed and it is impossible to simply pop by and collect things stored or drop stuff off. We need to be given notice to avoid causing you unnecessary stress. So, please...... Email all luggage correspondence to baclub@saexplorers.org AHEAD OF TIME!

This Visual Arts Event is an investigation and experimentation by The Academia de Bellas Artes de Venecia. Some of the work looks highly provocative and well deserving of a keen artist’s eye. Also, as the featured “Top Argentine Focus” this week is about Jorge Luis Borges himself, why not check out the cultural centre that is named after him for an hour or so?

The Café inside Boutique del Libro
Inside Boutique del Libro (written about below in Top Place of Interest) is a really beautiful café. It is an excellent place to sit and relax with a good book, to chat with friends or to make use of free wi-fi. The wi-fi connection here is really strong and very reliable. Also, you will not be on the receiving end of any biting looks for lingering over a coffee for hours just to make use of the internet connection either. This café is most definitely laptop user friendly.
__________________________
The decor and ambience of Boutique del Libro also works to its favour. Solid wooden chairs and tables occupy most of the surroundings and the bar is very well decked and presented. However, there is also a section with a beautiful, antique comfy armchair and sofa, warmly lit up by a tall freestanding floor lamp, complete with amber lampshade that creates a warm glow across the area.
__________________________
The menu is also another plus point for this café, offering salads, sandwiches, meriéndas and coffees galore. The sandwiches and salads are made to order. You can choose from a large selection of tasty ingredients (up to three ingredients for each dish) all for about 20 pesos.
__________________________
The licuados with either water or milk are served in a very tall glass and well worth the 10 pesos. Again a variety of fruits are available and the amount of fruit used to make each drink means that you can be sure to get at least one portion of your five a day here. Alternatively, why not try an alcoholic coffee of an eventide (as Boutique del Libro is open until 10pm every day, including Sundays) and get a little warm feeling inside from a shot of Baileys or a finely selected whisky.
__________________________
Equally, if a early morning breakfast or mid-afternoon stop-off is on the cards, the breakfasts and meriéndas, all served for under 20 pesos, are an excellent choice to keep hunger at bay. There are five different selections and are neatly named using national references. For example, the Americano includes coffee or tea, orange juice, scrambled eggs on toast with ham and toast on the side. Another choice is the Argentino, made up of coffee or tea, orange juice, toast with cheese, jam or dulce de leche. There is even a very healthy choice which includes a fruit platter too.
__________________________
Personally, I have to recommend the café praliné (coffee with praline). This coffee comes served black and in a small glass, with a chocolate covered biscotti biscuit on the side. However, what is so good about this order is that the praline is not just a flavouring in the coffee.... the coffee actually comes with pieces of chopped praline, neatly dropped inside. That means that when finishing the coffee, there is the wonderful experience of scooping up small pieces of praline to be had at the end.

Boutique del Libro
There are many places to buy books in the city (see Top Expat Knowledge below for more details) but it is doubtful whether there are many bookstores as beautiful as Boutique del Libro in Palermo.
________________________
The presentation as you enter this bookshop knocks you back. The bookcases stretch up to the ceiling and are deeply set back into the walls. There are wooden rung ladders found hanging around different parts of the shelves, giving access to the uppermost sections of the books on offer.
________________________
Down the centre of the aisles, heavy, wooden wheelbarrows of books tempt the avid reader to stop and scout through what’s on offer and the specialist magazine rack in the centre of the store as you enter is full to the brim with a number of different, specialist publications, advocating Boutique del Libro as a place which really knows everything there is to know about the written word in Buenos Aires.
________________________
Besides the café inside (previously mentioned above), Boutique del Libro also houses a small, independent music store. It also organizes and hosts various events throughout the month; this week being a reading by Adalana Midaleo. Boutique del Libro is more than a bookstore with a café. It is a hip and happening pocket of overflowing information in the land of books.
________________________
The message wall at the back of the store, behind the sofa in the café, is testament to the fact that many people have enjoyed and still enjoy visiting Boutique del Libro for whatever reason. If you haven’t been, there’s no time like the present.

Jorge Luis Borges, Argentine Writer born in Buenos Aires
Jorge Luis Borges is one of the most famous and remembered of Argentine writers of all time. The proof of his importance in Argentine literature is bathed all over the city of Buenos Aires if you know where to look.
________________________
Firstly, the Centro Cultural Borges, located inside Galerías Pacíficas on San Martin and Viamonte in the Microcentro, is one obvious example. It is a centre devoted to the promotion of the arts, housing photography exhibitions (last week they housed the Clarín photography exhibit for example) and home to many types of classes, including ballet and acting for all. In addition, the simple existence of the street name, Jorge Luis Borges in Palermo, is another indication of how much Argentines wish to remember his contribution to literature.
________________________
Borges began publishing poems and essays in Surrealist literary journals, was fluent in several languages and a target of political persecution during the Peron regime. Blind by his late fifties, Borges eventually died in Switzerland in 1986. Fictions and Labyrinths are two collections of his work that have been published in English by The New York Press and are an easy way of getting to grips with a little of the writer’s accomplishments.
_______________________
If a lighter introduction to Borges is what you’re interested in, take a coffee or go for a meal in San Telmo’s ´La Poesia´. This restaurant houses some photographs of the man himself, amongst other literary greats, and so ask around to get a peek on what the Argentine poet actually looked like.

Other Top Bookstores in the City
Buenos Aires is famous for the importance it has always placed on books and literature in general. In December, the annual Noche de Las Librerías (Bookstor Night) is testament enough to the fact that books play an important role in the daily life of the people of Buenos Aires.
________________________
Every year, the government organises this event where bookstores stay up all night, move furniture out onto the streets for people to sit and read more comfortably in the blazing heat of December and Buenos Aires has itself a night of reading. What bliss! However, the range of bookstores that can be found in the city are also more proof of the capital’s literary fever.
________________________
Firstly, and perhaps most widely known, is the Ateneo Bookstore on Santa Fe. This beautiful bookstore which used to be a theatre is now one of the most sort after bookstores on the tourist track in Buenos Aires.
________________________
The theatre was constructed in 1919 by a young man named Max Glucksman who named it The Grand Splendid. In 1924, he began broadcasting a radio station, entitled Radio Splendid, from the fourth floor of the building and recorded a number of albums with the great tango music makers of the day. In the late twenties, The Grand Splendid was converted into a cinema and began showing the first of the films made with sound. Its final transformation was into the book store as we know it today. Therefore, not only is this bookshop a great place to buy quality music and books, but it also has a beautiful history that oozes from its very pores from the moment you arrive.
________________________
More than a simple book shop, Ateneo is in itself a tribute to the arts and literature in particular. I love the lights, I love the balconies (where you can sit with a good book and spend almost half of the day reading quietly without distraction), I love the colours and the grand nature of the layout as well as the range of literature on offer. There are authors from across the globe and books in many languages. There's also a little cafe situated on what used to be the theatre's ample stage and it's a lovely little spot. It is rather expensive, as it is serviced by a waiter and they regularly have a pianist playing during the early evenings – only the best for the Ateneo elite!

If looking for some English books whilst in BA, Walrus Books in San Telmo is the place to head to. In its great central location on Estados Unidos 617, this bookshop is excellently placed to meet all SAE members' needs and offers a wide range of books for the intrepid traveller and expat to choose from.
www.walrus-books.com.ar
________________________
The bookshop sells used books in English and there are approximately 6000 different titles, including literature, Argentine and Latin American history, classic and modern novels and poetry, all in English.
________________________
As an area, the bookstores that stretch along Corrientes all the way from 9 de Julio until Callao. These bookstores are always offering great deals and discounts. Some of them house second-hand copies of stuff for dirt cheap prices and others are more specialised and stock everything bought new. Here’s a little breakdown of a few of them:
- Obel Libros – good for Latin American social and economic matters.
- Libreria Lucas – stocks lots of childrens books.
- Libreria Hernandez – sells some really nice porteño cook books.
- Posadas Libros – is housed in a huge building and is worth going to see just for that reason.
________________________
However, if you are looking for CHEAP guide books, then the best place to go is….. The SAE Clubhouse! You will not find guide books on South America cheaper anywhere else in the city. It’s a fact.

| Palabras! Palabras!...and...Question of the week |
|
Palabras, Palabras!
This is a personal favourite, although when you'd use it in ordinary chit chat, I'd don't know. However, if having a deeply interesting conversation with someone about real subjects and high emotion, this word may come in handy. Derriterse is a reflexive verb meaning 'to fall madly in love with.' However, this translation is fairly literal, because this verb can be used to describe the action of falling into any feeling of high emotion, worry, fret or stress, for example. Having said that, I do hope that you only ever make use of it when in a world of bliss and harmony.
