Top Food Spot

What and where can I eat in El Parque Tres de Febrero?
El Parque Tres de Febrero is huge and there are plenty of food stands dotted about that sell a variety of things to eat and drink. The normal fare of fast food is easily found......hamburgers, hot dogs, crisps, biscuits, caramelised nuts, coffee, juice, water. For Argentines, there's even a number of places that provide hot water (hay agua caliente) in order to top up your thermos when travelling around and drinking mate. More importantly however, you can buy candy floss (cotton candy to my North American friends out there! and copos de azucar en Castellano) as well as toffee apples, sometimes covered in popcorn too. It was a bit of a treat seeing these tasty little numbers on hand and made me feel like I was about five years old again.

However, if sat on the grass or park bench with a cheap and cheerful meal is not your idea of fun, inside the museum 'Museo de Artes Plasticas Eduardo Sivori' there's a very nice cafe. They serve the normal fare including coffees, teas, cakes, media lunas (large ones, actually) and sandwiches, but there is also an ample bar of wines and spirits to enjoy in the late afternoon. The place is light, airy and very comfortable with a range of interesting art hanging on the walls to ponder over. All this is on top of the free art magazines that are on offer, full of interesting articles and features on both local and international artists. Why not browse through them while munching?

Lastly, there is a small museum shop that you pass through to get to the cafe. The shop, like any other museum shop, sells a variety of trinkets and souvenirs including postcards, bookmarks, pens and bags. However, it also supports the work of local artists and it's possible therefore to know who made the jewelry you're buying - a nice touch! Every piece of work is labeled and some labels even have more detailed infomation about each artist to read. Therefore, eating in this museum offers you more than a regular snack.

So, whether it's cheap and cheerful or something a little more special, dining in Tres de Febrero is not going to disappoint you.

Top Place of Interest

What kinds of things can I see and do in El Parque Tres de Febrero?
Tres de Febrero is a hub of activity. However, I would advise you to visit on the weekend, particularly Sunday. On Sundays, you'll be surrounded by many other Argentines out with friends and family and the atmosphere, as well as the attractions on offer, is quite simply better.

You can enjoy walking through the park itself, around the lakes and in amongst the trees. Although, both cycling through or hiring a boat in order to enjoy the lakes in style are perhaps two options that are just a little bit more special. There's a beautiful white bridge and connecting pathway called 'El Puente Griego' which adds to the beauty of the park itself and once having crossed the bridge and followed the pathway to the end, you'll find yourself in 'El Paseo Rosedal' full of beautiful fountains, a rose garden and orange-coloured  pathways.

If gardens aren't what you're looking for, Tres de Febrero also boasts an excellent museum (mentioned in the Top Food Spot above) 'Museo de Artes Plasticas Eduardo Sivori' which you can enter and enjoy for 1 peso - an absolute bargain! On entering, pass into the room on your left and then continue following the art work in a loop until you end up where you began. In this fashion, you'll be seeing the work, by Argentine artists only, chronologically. The museum hosts work from the beginning of the 20th Century until the present day and regularly presents exhibits from different invited artists towards the back of the gallery. This helps to provide a little variety amongst all the set pieces every couple of weeks. The museum also offers classes covering a number of different art forms and some of them are free too. Breaking up your outdoor visit in the park by browsing around this museum makes for a really enjoyable afternoon and gives you a little bit of everything in one day.

Finally, back outside within the park itself, it's possible to hire a horse and carriage to enjoy a round trip of the park in comfort and style, adding a little magic to what is already a beautiful place to visit. Tres de Febrero is an oasis in the middle of the metropolis that will make you feel like Cinderella, although perhaps without fear of the carriage turning back into a pumpkin once the clock strikes.

Top Argentine Focus

What do Argentines do on Sundays in El Parque Tres de Febrero?
As a visitor to Buenos Aires, the museum is enough to draw your attention and the simple joy of fresh open air with beautiful views is a guaranteed enchanting day out. However, why not take your Tres de Febrero experience that little bit further and visit the greens in Argentine style?

Rollerblading is a very popular Argentine pastime and particularly in Tres de Febrero on the weekends. People of all ages enjoy slipping into a pair of rollerblades (which can be hired from many places around the park) and sailing off into the sunset like eagles gliding across the skies.......well, something like that! In truth, it's more common to see people scrambling to stay on their feet before making some spectacular falls and inadvertently entertaining everyone around them. When you rent out the rollerblades, it is possible to request classes at the same time, although not with every rollerblade renting spot. Still, I think that half of the fun is the learning with this 'sport' and it's a fun way of taking a little exercise, which can never be a bad thing.

Finally, I suggest that you treat yourself, in Argentine style, to a 'choripan' after an hour or two of exercise. Having rollerbladed to stardom, munching on a juicy 'choripan' is the next Argentine step. The 'choripan' is a special type of sausage in a crusty baguette made from both beef and pork, with lots of seasoning (condimentos) and spices (espices). It is a rich and distinctive feast, best enjoyed with a large, steaming coffee; a perfect end to an in the outdoors the Argentine way.

Well now you don't even have to do any inquiring for yourselves. There's nothing keeping you from enjoying one of BA's best parks on the weekend - any weekend...... Siempre estamos a su orden chicos!

Palabras! Palabras!...and...Question of the week

Choclo = corn.

This is an interesting one, because like a lot of food in South America, the name changes from country to country. In Venezuela, corn is 'maiz' for example. However, here in Argentina they go that one step further.... choclo is 'corn on the cob.' However, sometimes the choclo found inside an empanada is referred to as humita because of the way in which it is prepared and cooked, so watch out for that one!

LAST WEEK'S QUESTION.... How many Havana Cafe outlets can be found in Buenos Aires (including the provinces)? The answer is......NONE! Ha ha! Trick question! The chain company's label is spelt H-A-V-A-N-N-A and so I hope that there weren't too many of you traipsing around trying to find the answer under false pretenses! He he! However, there are in fact 29 Havannas in the city - just so you don't feel too robbed!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION... Where was this photograph taken?

Answers to: buenosairesclubhouse@saexplorers.org

Next week, I'll publish the answer....Ooooo!

This Week's Winning Photo

This week we have a beauty for you. Graham Newhall, the legendary 3 week winner with his Recoleta Cemetary shot, is back! This time, with a vegeance! Instead of one photograph, Graham has sent in an entire album, available to view in this handy little slideshow View Graham's Album and depicts a number of different doors and entrances in BA and Colonia, Uruguay. It's a really cool album that captures a lot of character. I'm becoming a Newhall fan.

Remember, the aim is to take a better photograph than the previous winner (this week Graham). If we don’t receive any worthwhile contenders, Graham will stay in our newsletter next week too. Can you top Graham's ALBUM with something better?

To enter our weekly competition, simply send in your pics to my email address buenosairesclubhouse@saexplorers.org (please put PHOTO COMPETITION in the subject heading) and be sure to include a little info about the photo along with your details so that we can give you credit.
