EC216 First time in Ecuado
Hello, I am 51 y/o and my 25 y/o daughter is coming with me to Ecuador this summer (during July). I am concerned about staying healthy. My doctor suggested the hepatitis shots (A and B), Malaria pills (we might be going in tropical areas), yellow fever shot and a 'script for antibiotic for the runs. Anything else that anyone knows of. There is a risk for rabis (sp?) but she didn't suggest a shot for that. Am I being too paranoid? >I'm taking a taxi late at night to downtown Quito from the Airport. Is there any danger in that? Any hotel suggestions? I am thinking about "La Rabia". I'll be taking advanced spanish conversation. Any suggestions for the best place to do that?
We will be staying with a friend who is native ecuadorian who owns a home near Quito so we're definately in good company.
Thanks in advance for your ideas/suggestions.

EC211 Vilcabamba / Cabañas Rio Yambala
Although Vilcabamba is a good destination, the management of this establishment has much to learn about customer service & the hospitality business. From my experience, visitors were treated more like intrusions than guests. They are apparently losing business to increased competition...this is easy to believe. In that there are many "highly recommended" places to stay in Vilcabamba, I'd avoid this one.

VOLUNTEER MANGROVE REPLANTING PROJECT IN ECUADOR

Come join the Mangrove Action Project (MAP) and FUNDECOL on a volunteer eco-work/ study tour to reforest mangroves on the pacific coast of Esmeraldes Province, Ecuador during the month of November.

Be involved with important restoration work, learn about tropical coastal ecosystems and help to increase the awareness of the importance of mangrove forests worldwide. This program will provide immediate benefits as well as leave behind tools for continued restoration. Destruction of mangrove forests worldwide has contributed to a loss of biodiversity, shoreline destabilization and a decline in coastal fisheries which provide local people with a significant portion of their daily protein needs and yearly incomes.

With a small amount of money and a 2-week effort, volunteers can reforest between 10 and 20 acres of as well as raise awareness concerning the problems associated with mangrove forest destruction worldwide. Volunteers will be working alongside local community members helping to restore this important resource.

The Mangrove Action Project (MAP) is a global network addressing the serious issues associated with mangrove forest loss. FUNDECOL is a dedicated NGO working to conserve the coastal ecology of the Esmeraldes province in Ecuador.

The volunteer program will be conducted from November 5-18. The group will meet in Quito on Nov. 5 and travel to Esmeraldes and Muisne on Nov. 7. Although there will be several days of mangrove replanting work, there will also be some time set aside for relaxation and fun including a fiesta on the final day. We will return to Quito on Nov. 17. At that point volunteers may want to arrange travel to other parts of the country or return home. Costs to the volunteers include their airfare, local bus fare, gasoline for boats, food, lodging and a $100 administration fee to FUNDECOL for all in-country arrangements made for the group.

Help contribute to this important project by participating in this volunteer effort.

EC300 Growing an Ecological City in Ecuador
The Ecuadorian coastal city of Bahia de Caraquez has committed itself through law to become ecological and sustainable. Planet Drum Foundation in San Francisco, California helped create community awareness of issues there at a celebration announcing the Ecological City Declaration in January 1999.
Since then, we have established a field office and carried out a major bioregional project to revegetate a city barrio with native trees for erosion control against future mudslides and to create an urban "wild corridor."
Planet Drum staffers will return to Bahia in early September 2000 for further work in various areas of urban sustainability. These may include additional revegetation of hillsides, water supply and purity, household ecology education, biological sewage treatment, alternative energy, and others.
You are invited to assist or visit these projects from September until January 2001. If you are interested in doing so, please inform us as soon as possible so that we can communicate further about details. Also, see our web site at www.planetdrum.org under "Eco Ecuador."

EC294 Galapagos for older travelers and a great Quito hotel
Can anyone recommend a tour company or guide for the Galapagos that could accommodate older travelers? I've promised my mother a trip there for her birthday next year. She's very active, but still 70 years old, so would not be interested in very rigorous hiking. But I'd also want a trip that would not bore me senseless and could include - for me - strenuous hiking. Is this remotely possible? Have also discovered a terrific little hotel in Quito -- La Rabida. $48/night double with an absolutely delightful staff, 11 cozy and comfortable rooms, wine bar, Italian cook and lovely little reading room with a big fireplace. They can be found on the web through any search engine.

EC284 Cycling Companion Wanted
Hello, My name is Tania Siemens, I am from Oregon, USA. I am a 26 year old woman and an avid cyclist. I have loads of cycle touring experience: I just finished 7 months of cycling in Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia. Well, Ecuador is next, and I was wondering if any of you fellow Cycle Crazy folks out there would like to join me?

I am looking for cycle partners for a 4 to 6 week Giro de Ecuador starting late March and ending early May, 2001. I know, that is still a whole year away, but time flies, and planning and organizing leaving your family, friends, pets, home, and job can take a while. So, this is advance notice. If you are interested, email me and we can talk about it.

More about me: I work on and off as a Biologist. I love the natural side of life, I am flexable, and I usually have a good time because I try to find the humor/positive in whatever cituation. I can fix most things that go wrong with bikes, I speak Spanish fairly well, am experienced with Latin American travel and culture, and, I am on a budget.

Any takers????

EC272 English teachers wanted in Cuenca
We are accepting applications ASAP. Our English program consists of regular classroom courses and individual tutorials. Teachers of classroom courses must have a university degree and a TEFL certificate. For all staff a minimum commitment of three months is necessary, although we give preference to those who can commit to a full year. A typical cross-section of students in our program includes business professionals and university students who study English for its necessity in the global market, as well as other adults who study for personal fulfillment. In addition to the regular adult program we offer special classes for teenagers and children, as well as one-on-one classes for those who wish individualized instruction. The courses are based on similar EFL programs in the United States and Europe and as such are quite intensive. We demand high standards from both our teachers and students. We offer four levels of English: beginning, intermediate, advanced and written and oral expression. There is an assigned textbook for each level, but the teacher has freedom to supplement or omit parts to meet the particular needs of their students. If you are interested in coming for the term beginning in October, please fill out an application form, along with two letters of recommendation, preferably from someone who is familiar with your teaching. I would also like a copy of your resume. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

EC270 Volunteering Info
We have just returned from a great volunteering experience and wanted to let you know. We saw a poster in Quito for the chance to work at a school (called Genesis) in Bahia de Caraquez. The school has 25 pupils (4-7 years old) and has some great values it operates under (love, play, sharing, respect). It wants volunteers to teach English for 2 hours a day which gives the volunteer a chance to explore the area and relax. The school and adjoining house are next to the beach and the school has a wonderful atmosphere. Accomodation was provided free in the house. All meals were provided at a reasonable price. We stayed for a wonderful two weeks (the minimum stay) and also explored the whole area at the weekends. No english teaching experience is needed although a good education is. It is also possible to earn extra money at Bahia's english teaching college.  As an experience, this is fantastic! Contact Genesis at vladirv@hotmail.com.

Hope this information helps.

Yours,
Richard and Jane

EC247 warning for people who travel by bike through ecuador
hi, this is a warning for people who travel by bike through ecuador. Four people try to make an armed robbery on the road from Naranjal to Guayaquil, about 20 km away from Puerto Inca on direction to guayaquil. My friend traveled alone by bike, when it happens. The four men stopped him with guns, and try to rob his bicycle. He tried to escape by bike but they shot at him. So he stopped and the robbers demand his bike once more. My friend involves them in a diskussion (luckily he speaks fairly good spanish). During the time, the hold up happens, many cars pass the place very slowly. Perhaps this is the reason why the robbers suddenly gave up, jumped in their car and went away. This is a very lucky end of a dangerous situation. I think, that the robbers weren`t professional-that was the fortune. So be careful on this road, perhaps dont`t travel alone. Some ecuadorian friends from Guayaquil told us, that the whole way between Machala and Guayaquil is dangerous, but I don' t know if it's right. For further informations about this robbery or informations about travelling by bike in peru please send a mail to thomaszorn@hotmail.com in english or german.

EC228 In the footsteps
I am a British journalist/author who is planning to walk in the footsteps of the Victorian naturalist-explorer, Richard Spruce. In particular, I want to retrace the journey Spruce made in 1860 from Banos over Chimborazo and through the pass of Llullundengo to a town called Limon on the western slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes. If anyone out there has made the journey, or even a part of it, and can give me advice on climbing conditions and the best time of year to attempt the journey I would appreciate it. I would also welcome advice on how best to organise the expedition.

Guides Fausto and Oswaldo Cerda.
telephone (06) 886-250

for $25-30 a day you are given three meals a day, all equipment, clean cabanas, and can choose from activities like horseback riding, white water rafting, informative nature hikes, etc. the family who runs this LITERALLY bends over backwards to ensure that you are well taken care of and have a good time. It feels very much like a family affair, as everyone who lives within a mile radius of the cabanas is somehow related to the Cerdas. Very nice people and native to the area. this was interesting because perhaps they did not know the scientific names of all the flowers, but they knew what it was like to LIVE in the jungle and what was useful, what harmful etc. when not running tours they cultivate cacau and coffee. we took a bus from Quito to Tena, 5 1/2 hrs, 30,000 sucres, or $4.50 each way. bring a flash light, bug spray long pants, a rain coat and a pocket knife. our tour was for three days, the last night in Tena Fausto and Oswaldo took us out to dinner in a local resturaunt. vey nice experience.

EC189 Cotopaxi Park warnings
I just returned from Ecuador and these are a few caveats to pass along:

WARNING #1 - Bring your own water to the Ribas hut at Cotopaxi: Dispite what the SAE Quito clubhouse tells you about purifying the water and dispite my iodizing and boiling, I got diarrea from the water from the cistern. It seems a hut keeper used the blue retrieval pail for hut cleaning. (And no sanitary facilities are available at the hut -- the latrines were pad-locked.)

WARNING #2 - It seems the Cotopaxi National Park toll house keeper is failing to give paid visitors a PARK ENTRY PASS after paying the US$10 entry fee. The entry pass is valid 5 or 7 days (it doesn't say on the pass) from the date stamped on the pass. Instead, he is thought to be pocketing the money and demanding US$10 for entry each time. When you get the pass, be sure it has the correct date stamped on it.

WARNING #3 - Watch out for pick pockets at Terminal Terrestre even after you get on the bus. My friend was dressed like a rich gringo and got his pockets picked while he was loading his stuff onto the overhead bin. The bus driver and conductor laughed when they were notified and made us pay for another ticket. (And oh, be sure to get separate tickets for each member of your party.)

(Email me for more warnings.)
