Visa
Passports are not required by citizens of neighboring countries who hold identity cards issued by their respective governments. With a valid passport and a round-trip ticket, visas are not necessary for citizens of the US, Britain, nations in Western Europe, Canada, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Barbados, Jamaica, Malaysia, Israel, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Japan. Visitors from these countries will be given a tourist card upon entry and may stay for up to three months. This period can be renewed for another three months at the National Directorate of Migration, Antártida Argentina 1365, Buenos Aires (telephone: 011-4312 8663). No renewals are given after the expiration date.
For all other visitors, there are three forms of visas. First is a business temporary visa, valid for one year. Next is a tourist visa, which is valid for three months and given to you when you enter the country. Such a visa is valid for multiple entries. Be sure to check on reentry that border officials look at the correct expiration date on your visa because they may only give you 30 days. Renewing your visa is difficult and it may be easier to cross into a neighboring country then reenter and get a new tourist visa valid for another three months.
Be sure you are given a tourist card upon entry; otherwise you will have to obtain one before leaving the country. Also, if you plan to stay for several weeks, you may want to register at your embassy or consulate in case your passport is lost or stolen; this will speed up the process of getting a replacement.
Argentine immigration and customs officials wear civilian clothes. The border patrols wear green combat fatigues. Make sure your passport is stamped when you cross borders. Also, do not lose your entry card as replacing it causes lots of trouble.
No vaccinations are required for entry.
A tax of U$S 18 must be paid upon leaving the country.
