Brazil Bus Information
With the exception of the Amazon Basin, buses are the primary form of long-distance travel. Bus services are generally excellent. Departure times are adhered to; do not plan on a delay. All major cities are linked by frequent buses and there are a large number of long-distance buses.
There are three main classes of ling-distance bus. The ordinary comum or convencional is the most common. These are fairly comfortable and usually have a toilet on board. An executive is more comfortable, costs about 25% more and stops less often. A leito (bed) can cost twice as much as a comum and is exceptionally comfortable.
Note: Air conditioning is strong on many of these buses so you may want a sweater or light jacket to keep warm, especially at night.
Finally: Usually, you can go to the bus station, buy a ticket and board the next outbound bus. However, there are advantages for buying your ticket a few hours in advance such as assigned seat (some busses fill up the aisles), and a seat away from the toilet (which may become smelly). Every big city and most small cities has a bus station (rodoviária). There are often two or more bus companies that go to the same destination and quality varies so be sure to check out more than one company.
