Chile Bus Information

Buses are frequent and on the whole good. Despite holiday times, there are generally no problems getting a seat on a long-distance bus.

Some useful bus terms are salón-cama which means 25 seats on a bus, semi-cama (ejecutivo) which means 34 seats on a bus, and pullman which means 44 seats on a bus. The fewer seats, the more leg room you have and on the salon-cama bus, you will be able to almost fully recline.

People are generally able to negotiate prices for bus tickets. The exceptions apply during the busy season (December – March). During Independence celebrations in September, fares from Santiago double. Students and holders of IYHA cards may be able to get discounts, but usually not during peak season. Even so, by North American standards, fares are a bargain.

Reservations are usually required during the holiday season (Christmas, January, February, Easter, and mid-September patriotic holidays) or on long trips or on rural routes with limited service. Otherwise, it is rarely necessary to book more than a few hours in advance.
