Holidays and Festivals

On public holidays, many of the stores and all of the public offices close for the day in Uruguay. There is some public transportation; however, the schedule is limited. The following is a list of the public holidays:

January 1 – Año Nuevo (New Year’s Day)
March or April – Semana Santa (Easter Week)
May 1 – Día del Trabajo (Labor Day)
May 21 – Glorias Navles (commemoration of the naval Battle of Iquique)
May 30 – Corpus Christi
June 29 – Día de San Pedro y San Pablo (St. Peter & St. Paul’s Day)
August 15 – Asunción de la Virgen (Assumption)
September 18 – Día de la Independencia Nacional (National Independence Day)
September 19 – Día de Ejército (Armed Forces Day)
October 12 – Día de la Raza
November 1 – Todo los Santos (All Saints’ Day)
December 8 – Inmaculada Concepción (Immaculate Conception)
December 25 – Navidad (Christmas Day)
