Bringing Your Dog to Ecuador
Here is the information member provided to us on how she planned to bring her dog to Ecuador.
Name: Judy Hawkes
Email: Please email us and we will forward your email to Judy.
Last Christmas, we took our dog with us to France and have planned to take him to Ecuador. We will be in Ecuador six weeks.
1. You need to take your dog to your local vet in the U.S. to obtain a health certificate.
The Rabies Vaccination must be within the last 12 months and a month before departing for Ecuador. The veterinarian will fill out a “United States Interstate and International Certificate of Health Examination for small Animals.” There are five copies of the form. The veterinarian should list the vaccinations and dates. Be sure the vet has signed the Health Certificate.
2. Call the office of the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for an appointment to obtain their stamp on the “United States Interstate and International Certificate of Health Examination for small Animals.” There is a fee for this service. I think it is $20.
For Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont . I contacted Rosemary Sifford at 1-603-228-0349. She travels between the states and maintains office hours in the different states. I travel to Concord, New Hampshire for my appointment. Rosemary Sifford is a good source of information and can provide specific requirements for different countries. Each country has different requirements.
3. Embassy of Ecuador - 1-202-234-7166 (Health Certificate questions)
2535 15th St. NW
Washington, D.C. 2009
15 days before you plan to travel you must send the stamped “United States Interstate and International Certificate of Health Examination for small Animals,” Rabies Certificate and Health Certificate to the Embassy with a $50 check (I’m going to use a money order or bank check to avoid any problems.)
You must include a self addressed envelope. I’m going to Fedex the information to the Embassy of Ecuador and include a return Fedex envelope to be sure the “visa” arrives before we leave for Ecuador.
4. We have made contact with a veterinarian in Quito who will arrange for our dog to stay at a nearby kennel while we travel to the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu. He describes the kennel as the nicest one he has ever seen, including those in the United States. The name of the kennel is Lord Guau and the veterinarian will make arrangements for the kennel to pick our dog up at the clinic.
5. Name of veterinarian in Quito: Michael R. Whittington DVM ProVetsS
San Ignacio E11-119 y Coruña
Quito, Ecuador

6. Requirements for the return to U.S. 10 days before travel to U.S. According to the veterinarian in Quito, you need to obtain a health certificate and permission from the ministry of agriculture. It is not difficult and only requires a couple of hours. The veterinarian, said, if need be, he can arrange for the kennel to bring our dog in for the exam and he would deal with the paperwork for us. We will need proof of the rabies vaccine within the last 12 months. You need the serial number off the vaccine bottle. Ask your U.S. veterinarian to include this information on a signed certificate (The health certificate to enter Ecuador would be fine.) We are to bring the health certificate to his clinic when we arrive.
Be sure to make copies of all your certificates.
