Holidays and Festivals
On public holidays, many of the stores and all of the public offices close for the day in Uruguay. There is some public transportation; however, the schedule is limited. The following is a list of the public holidays:
January 1 Año Nuevo (New Year’s Day)
January 6 Epifanía (Epiphany)
March or April Viernes Santo (Good Friday) and Pascua (Easter)
April 19 Desembarco de los 33 (Return of the 33) – This holiday honors the people who returned to liberate Uruguay from Brazilian rule with the help of Argentina.
May 1 Día del Trabajador (Labor Day)
May 18 Batalla de Las Piedras (Battle of Las Piedras) – celebrates a major battle in the fight for independence.
June 19 Natalicio de Artigas (Artigas’ Birthday)
July 18 Jura de la Constitución (Constitution Day)
August 25 Día de la Independencia (Independence Day)
October 12 Díade la Raza (Colombus Day)
November 2 Día de los Muertos (All Souls’ Day)
December 25 Navidad (Christmas Day)
