Medical Information

The phone numbers, fees quoted, etc, are correct at the time of writing, but obviously may vary over time. Furthermore, all will accept cash in US dollars and Uruguayan Pesos. Many also accept credit cards, although this can change as the credit card companies charge large fees. These fees are usually passed on to the patients as a 5-10% surcharge.

Immunizations

At the date of writing there are no specific immunisation requirements for Uruguay. Moreover, Uruguay is non-malarial, although mosquitoes can still be a nuisance!

Where to get treated

Accident on a public highway

The police will handle whatever the problem is (telephone 911). As soon as they are notified, they are in charge of calling the medical service even if there is no risk of life. This initial medical assistance is totally free of charge.

If further medical care is needed, such as the need of a specialist or being hospitalised, the ambulance is in charge of taking you to a public or private hospital.

Other public places (not on a public highway)

The vast majority of hotels, shopping centres, shops and public transport normally provide medical assistance. This kind of “facility” is provided to everyone who is receiving their services, and usually has the support of emergency medical ambulances. The procedure is the same as that described above in 1.

Other places

You should go to:

First aid attendance, including the ambulance service is free of charge, as is the medicine required in the first instance. If it is necessary to remain hospitalised as a consequence of surgery or for any other reason, you will need to pay a fee according to the service provided.

After leaving hospital, you can have medicine prescribed from the hospital or at any chemist, again paying for this.

There is a list of the public hospitals with their phone numbers below.

In all cases of medical attendance you will be charged. The charge will depend on the type of services received.

Clinical attendance or ambulance services (not falling within a. and b.), cost about U$S 50 for consultation and attendance at the clinic. U$S 300 is charged in case of ambulance service.

The best known of these services in Montevideo are SEMM, UCM and SUAT. There are many other clinics which operate in each Department of Uruguay. Information about these services is readily available when in the Department.
