Each month we corner some poor local and ask them to spill the beans on the best kept secrets in their hometown. This month we grill Bruno Bonierbale, who lives in Jauja, in the province of Junín, Peru.

What is the best thing about living in Jauja? Well, because we are at 3400m, the climate is dry and the sky is amazing. Also there are endless treks you can do.

When you visit the Central Andes what must you see and do? The glacier Huaytapallana is a must, as well as Las Ruinas (pre-Inca ruins) in Tunanmarca. Also try to trek the Camino Inca, which joins Tarma and Jauja. The lakes above Ricran are beautiful as are Laguna Paca and the natural reserve of Nor Jaujos. And so much more!

What is the best travel tip for traveling in the sierra? Make sure you have good shoes, sunglasses and an insatiable curiosity.

When you come to Junín you must bring: Some biscuits, cans of tuna or even little toys because when you are travelling in the countryside, meeting people in the fields,  they will often invite you to share some moments with them. In these situations a small gift goes a long way.

A local drink/dish to try is: Calientito (hot tea with lemon, honey rum or pisco). The bread in Jauja is famous because it is baked in a wood-fired oven.

Something only locals know is: The region is very famous for its artesania (craft), locals know ‘who does what’ and where, so ask a local where to find the best!
