PE293 Airline Tickets
I am currenlty doing voluntary work in South America and would like to fly home to Britain from Lima at the end of September. Unfortunately buying a ticket in South America is very expensive, where as buying one in Britain is much cheaper, but tickets have to be posted to a UK address to qualify for UK prices, and are only despached 10 days before a flight. So is there anybody in Britain planning to fly to Lima around that time who could carry a ticket for me? I would pay a small courier fee. Please contact me if you can help.

PE292 Hiking in Huaraz
I'm currently in Huaraz and looking for partners to do some hiking with. I don't climb and I'm no masochist, but I'm reasonably fit and adapted to the altitude. So I would like to go on an average 3 - 10 day trip within the next days. I'm 28, male, easy to get along with and reasonably funny for a German. Fluent in English and French, my Spanish is ok.

He is a tourist guide and operator who can help you see and understand the cloud and rain forests of Manu, the Tambopata-P. Maldonado area, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Inca Trail. PE290 Companion for hiking around Huaraz
I am looking for hiking companion(s) to travel with in the Cordierra Blanca, starting around June 28th. Plan on climbing to the saddle between Alpamayo and Quitaraju, climbing to the summit of Nevado Pisco, and posssibly Ishinka or Chopicalqui. Basically, I'm up for long hard walks with crampons and ropes, not really technical rock climbing, but high altitude hiking.
Leaving the 15th of July, and don't have any set timetable for one hike or another.

El Gran Pajaten + Amazon
In an exhibition in the Museo de la Nacion in Lima I came across the ruin site El Gran Pajaten. It seems to be in the middle of nowhere, in the northern Peruvian Andes, east of Trujillo. It is possible to get there, and people who've been there told me it's worth all the struggle. Great scenery on the 3-day hike and fascinating ruins. I'm looking for someone to share this adventure with, starting around Nov.8th. Afterwards I'll travel down the Amazon, from Yurimaguas to Lagunas, where I want to visit the Jungle-Reserve whose name I'm constantly forgetting, and on to Iquitos and Brazil. I'd love to find a travel partner for this trip. Please contact me:

PE268 dry nights in the jungle?
Help! My husband is returning to Manu in February to work on a canopy walkway project at Manu Wildlife Center. We have been there before; it is an amazing place. He seeks help with avoiding a month of clammy, damp sheets each night. Does anyone have suggestions for something he can take to mitigate the dampness of the cotton sheets? He says it really interferes with his sleep. ( I had no such problem but he's a sensitive guy!) Someone out there must have a hint. I had thought about a silk sleep sack.
thanks!

PE257 Alegria Tours in Nasca - not that good after all
Alegria Tours in Nazca were the most recommended agency whenever we asked about Nazca; however, our experience was by far the worse we had in three months in Peru. To make a long story short, their tour to the Chauchilla cemetery sucked (it lasted 10 minutes and the guide would ask us to hurry up whenever we stop to admire the scenery or whatever), and their flight above the lines...never happened!!! Apparently, they overbook and then bump people by giving them excuses and making them stay another day or two (usually at their own hotel) because, after all, you go to Nazca to see the lines, right?

Advice: go directly to the airport and book the flight with them, it's 5 bucks more, but you don't get bumped!!!

PE237 mystery town near Macchu Picchu
I heard from a friend about leaving from Cusco by bus for a town with apparently particularly beautiful ruins. You then stay the night there in a hostal, and hike from there the next day, meeting up with any Macchu Picchu hikers a day later along the trail. He couldn't remember the name of the town, and when HE went there wasn't the restriction of having to have a guide for M.P., so I doubt if I could even do this little side trip unaccompanied. But if I could get a guide to do it, does the site ring a bell for anyone so I could find out more about it?

PE234A reservations in Aguas calientes
We stayed in La Cabana, which had at least ten empty rooms a couple weeks ago- we were at first nonplussed that they bungled our reservations, after calling and reconfirming in Cuzco, but got a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the town nontheless. We found that the word "reservation" caused more confusion than anything everywhere we stayed except for the Loreto in Cuzco. Just showing up and asking for a room seemed sufficient. There seem to be a lot more hostals in Aguas Calientes than tourists, judging from our experience during the tourist high season (end of June this year). My advice to you is not to fear to play it by ear in Aguas Calientes.

PE289 Cusco Agency Scam
Don't let the tour agencies sucker you into getting a porter with them by telling you they have to buy extra tickets for porters to enter the Inca Trail. There are plenty of extra hands along the trail on the first and second day--people live there! They are honest and looking for work, and all of the money you give will go to them.

If you're concerned with porter treatment, don't go with Andean Explorers Cusco. They're on the Plaza de Armas. They charged us a fee for the porter, then once on the trail we found we didn't have one. They expected the guide and the cook to do the portering as well, when they had a lot of things to carry already. I don't even know if any portion of our "porter fee" went to them.

PE286 Source for Peru Domestic Flights
I had an earlier post requesting Info. on reserving tickets for air travel in Peru before arriving. I got a reply w/ the e-mail of a travel agent in Peru that will take reservations via e-mail & meet you at the airport. They do speak English, but I believe you have to pay cash for your ticket. The e-mail is: raymi_travels@perusat.net.pe

I got a 1-way flight from Lima to Cusco for $58US, plus a $15US service charge for delivery of the ticket at the Lima airport. Their driver met me at the airport at 4:00am, just outside the Customs area, drove me over to the domestic terminal, and helped me check in for my flight to Cusco (TANS Airline). I´d say it was worth the $15, plus no wasted time hanging around trying to arrange a flight.

Good Luck & Safe Travels!

They also provide airport delivery for a tip which you decide. We gave them $7 for delivering three tickets.

PE284A RE: Connection in Lima Airport
In order to determine the appropriate minimum connecting time for any airport, all you need to do is as any travel agent or your primary (international) airline. This is referred to as MCT or minimum connecting time, and can be determined by providing the city in which you will be connecting, the two airlines, and which flight will be international or domestic. This time should never be shortened as both the airlines and the airport authorities set this time. In many cases you may want a longer connection. I am a travel agent and I have seen all too many missed connections. Finally, the best way to insure valid connections is to book the entire itinerary together. Many major airlines (i.e. American Airlines) will help you when there have been delays, but only if they can see your connecting flights on the same booking with their own flights. Discuss all of this with a professional travel agent.
Dave dhodge16@home.com

PE284 RE: Connection in Lima airport
An hour's layover is chancy.  Customs go at a snail's pace for one aircraft full of passengers, even with all the booths open.  We could have made our flight with only an hour layover, but it would've been close and I'd have been tense.  Might as well take the next flight out.  There are so many, and there are several airlines to go with.  If you risk it, ask your travel agent what happens should you be delayed.  They may charge a fee for changing to a later flight at the last hour.

PE277 puno resources
We have had great success working with Wilber Castillo of Andenes Tours (offices in Juliaca and Puno) on all sorts of travel arrangements in the past few years. In Puno he is at Jr. Tacna #300, telefax 054 363383 and cel. 622284, in Juliaca at Jr. San Roman # 204-A telefax 054 328635. He can accomodate small requests as well as large groups and is prompt, responsive, honest, has a good sense of humor and kind, helpful staff.

When we were unable to cross to Bolivia in April, due to the political crisis, he somehow got us rerouted to Lima in time to make our international flight, we had been told there were no seats. He knows the area and can customize to suit individual interests/needs. Prices are reasonable. We also recommend Henry Vallejo as a terrific and knowledgeable guide, great English too. You can reach him via Wilber or email him at pioneros06@yahoo.com  He is a student and documentary film maker, very knowledgeable about cultural, spiritual matters and practices.

For very clean hotels in the expensive (for Peru) range, lots of hot water and services, good breakfasts included for the $52-55. double room rate: Hotel Colon Inn colon.mail@cosipidata.com.pe(, a bit noisy due to location) and Qelqatoni at Jr. Tarapaca # 355 telef. 054366172 qelqatani@punonet.com Qelqatoni has huge comfortable rooms with heaters, nice staff very quiet and just behind carless Lima street where all the banks etc are located. For cheaper digs: we met a couple travelling around the world for a year who were at Hostal Uros for about $7. per night, they said it was clean, safe, convenient and had soap and toilet paper, towels too!

If you want a reed boat built and shipped talk to the secretary of the Uros Islands, Hector Suana Colla or write to him at Isla Sta Maria, Presidente de Tupire, Correo Central, Puno (you can write in English if need be) There is a telephone somewhere for Uros, maybe informacion has it? For an inspiring stay on Amantani, stay with our friend Juan Mamani Cari, in Inkatiana, and his family for maybe 13 soles a night (or less) including 3 meals and boat fare. Take warm clothes and some fruit or goodies for the island folk. Ask Juan about the bakery project which is helping young islanders learn a trade to use on the mainland and supplyhing the island with bread, formerly purchased only in Puno, a 4 hour boat ride. Juan is a natural community organizer and has many terrific ideas for grassroots projects on this enchanting island.

Their knowledge about places such as Chan Chan, El Brujo, Las Huacas del Sol y de la Luna is comprehensive and seemingly inexhaustible. E-mail is: microbewhite@yahoo.com, phone is 44243347. We had comfortable, clean and fun housing at their nearby relatives for $5. per night/person. You can contact Micahel or Clara for this or directly to Altemira Bravo Diaz de Mejia and her husband Luis Mejia (neither speak English) at 291796 in Trujillo. The house is in the Santa Maria district, about a 10 minute walk from the Plaza, at Toparpa No. 431. They are used to having guests and students and permit cooking. They also have one of the unique hairless dogs of northern Peru!

PE262 Looking for work in cafe, bar, or restaurant
I am a 28 year old Canadian female with 7 years waitressing experience (fine dining and cocktail waitressing), and I am looking for work in a restaurant, bar or cafe. I am currently travelling in South America, and would like to settle down for awhile and work. I am quadrilingual (English, German, French and Spanish), so I would be able to deal with customers from different parts of the world. Does anyone have any info on how I could find a job? Hoping to hear from you...
