Climbing in South America
The only article about climbing that I ever wanted to publish in the South American Explorer had the title “South American Mountains I Never Got Around to Climbing.”
From this you can gather that I’m not a climber and have just been called into to write some lines for this page until real climbers come along and write something more useful.
In the meantime, however, SAE members should note that there are a lot of SAE trip reports on climbing all sorts of mountains like Sangay, Cotopaxi, mountains in Southern Chile and accounts of Gran Campo Nevado and lesser known Patagonian peaks, to say nothing of Bolivian, Venezuelan, Colombian, and of course, Peruvian summits.
And that’s just trip reports. The SAE also has assorted articles and back issues about climbing Aconcagua, Huascarian, Cololo, Cerro Kukenan, Pissis, and more.
What else? Well, we sell topo maps of Aconcagua, assorted mountains in the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash, and other places, as well as a selection of books on climbing.
Finally, the SAE publishes the Aconcagua climbing packet, which we could be persuaded to hand over free to someone who could be trusted to update it. Also, we have an updated Bolivia climbing packet and a Huaraz packet, both of which contain valuable information on these climbing areas.
And finally, there is a lot more information of critical interests to climbers that could be found on this page if climbers would come down from the mountain and start writing reports on their adventures, which we could mention here.
