Driving in South America
It wasn’t that long ago that if you were driving from the U.S. or Canada to South America, we had all the information on driving. That’s changed. Now with the Internet, it’s quite possible to contact people driving to or around South America on a daily basis, if you so choose, and come up with the very latest information.
So, does this mean the South American Explorer has nothing to say on the subject? Of course not. We still publish the South American driving packet with lots of information on choosing a vehicle, insurance, shipping around the Darien, and much more. This can be ordered from our catalogue. They also sell Chris Yellend’s book Driving Through Latin America and we can point would-be drivers to South America to the extensive writings of Don Zobel and Larry McGuiness, who have traveled all over South America in vehicles and supplied detailed information plus, in Larry’s case, photographs.
You should also know that if you plan to drive to South America, the SAE might be persuaded to host your web page while you’re doing it. This has many advantages. For one thing, it makes it easy for people to find you because they’re quite likely to click on our page long before they find your page. Also, we’re in contact with a whole bunch of current, previous, and future drivers who would probably be inclined to provide you with sage advice, tips, anecdotes, and warnings if they knew what you were up to. Finally, it would be easier for you to have us host your page and leave the driving to you. Of course, we’d benefit by your experience and be able to make that information available to the next driver who wants to go South, go far South.
